A 15-year-old student in Pennsylvania has accused his high school of spying on him using a school-supplied MacBook. The school had accused the boy “inappropriate behavior” that it found him engaged in via the built-in Webcam. Lawsuits are flying, as you might imagine. The school didn’t say what activity the boy was engaged in, and it doesn’t really matter.

Extensions Broke Your Browser? With that, however, comes the inevitable - browser crashes. While Google Chrome doesn't have a safe mode in the same way the Firefox or Windows does, it does offer another option that provides the same functionality and can save you a whole bunch of trouble. Sponsor The folks over at the Google Operating System blog pointed out this tip today and we thought it was a worthwhile how-to for our readers. If you've found yourself in the terrible position of having a broken version of Chrome and you don't want to uninstall and start over from scratch, you can instead launch Chrome using "incognito mode", which disables extensions and allows you to disable your the bad apple extensions.

CNN’s Take On ‘Book Piracy’

Tech

a-digital-copy

a-whole-bunch

already-covered

books-available

cnn

colbert-report

digital-version

find-out-that

harry

have-the-option

least-the-ebook

music

sherman-alexie

paperbag was the first of a whole bunch of you to send in CNN's article on 'book piracy.' To be honest, there was so little substance in the article that I didn't see much of a reason to post it -- but since people keep submitting it, it seems that quite a few of you are hoping to discuss it. A lot of folks pointed out Sherman Alexie's comments complaining about "piracy," but those quotes were taken verbatim from his appearance on The Colbert Report , which we already discussed . To be honest, what disappointed me with CNN's article is that it didn't challenge any of the obviously bogus statements made in the article. We already covered the problems with Alexie's, but CNN also notes: "J.K Rowling has thus far refused to make any of her Harry Potter books available digitally because of piracy fears." Of course, that assumes that it's the official digital version that gets copied. While I haven't checked, I would be stunned to find out that all of Ms.

Engadget for iPhone / iPod touch: available now!

Gadgets

a-whole-bunch

appleiphone

appleipodtouch

breaking-news

engadget app

engadget iphone app

engadget show

engadgetapp

image

iphone 3g

iphone 3gs

iphone app

ipod touch

Good news, everyone! Google City Tours , one of the in-progress projects on the Google Labs site, has been overhauled to l0ok, feel and work a lot more like Google Maps. A Google software engineer who blogged about it from the company’s Zurich office calls the upgrades “a whole bunch of small user interface improvements.” What he should have said is, “Finally, finally you can figure it out.” City Tours has been upgraded on three fronts. First, it now includes complete walking directions and times for tours. The tours can be customized to a specific day and time, and Google will modify the tour to avoid sending you to sites it believes will be closed at that hour.

Make Windows Stop Asking for a Password When It Wakes Up [Windows]

Tech

a-whole-bunch

advanced

configure-your

home

password

Passwords

Power Options

prevent-windows

setting

sleep

this-on-your

time

tips

Windows Xp

windows-vista

If you're sick and tired of typing in your password every time your PC comes out of sleep mode, there's a simple tweak you can do to prevent it from happening again. Over at the How-To Geek site (my home away from Lifehacker), I've written up a guide to changing the setting in each version of Windows, since it's different in all of them. For Windows 7, you can simply head to Power Options and find the Require a password on Wake Up link on the left-hand pane, in Windows XP it's on the Advanced tab of the Power Options, and in Windows Vista there's a whole bunch of extra steps—you'll need to head into the advanced power options and change the setting there. It should go without saying that you probably don't want to enable this on your laptop, especially if you are traveling and keep your PC in standby most of the time—but it could really save you a lot of time, especially if you usually configure your PC to logon to Windows automatically .
