The best meetings at shows like E3 consist of quality time with the game being shown and a knowledgeable person who stays out of your way while playing but who can answer questions if they arise. For someone who wants to report on games, this is akin to bliss. At E3, of course, there is a temptation to spend, to create some sort of “experience” around a game with deafening sound, celebrity guests, and of course a show of some kind.
The latest trailer for Crysis 2 takes us through the area demoed during EA’s E3 press conference. Sure, it looks just as slick as it did last week, but we’re confused by the area’s “Safe Zone” label. Between the giant killer robots, the average-sized killer robots and toppling MetLife building, we fail to see said zone’s inherent safety. This is a column about Peter Moore, and because it’s about the EA Sports president, it’s going to be, in some way, about Madden NFL ’s exclusive license. So, let’s get this out of the way. Because Peter’s probably reading. More »
The war for dominance over the motion-controlled gaming market escalated significantly earlier this week, when Microsoft’s Kinect gained an endorsement from one of the world’s foremost cultural leaders: Teen sensation Justin Bieber. Click past the jump to see the intro video to one of Bieber’s recent performances: A clip which shows Bieber and company trying out Dance Central and Kinect Adventures , unlocking a few lucrative (albeit fake) Achivements along the way. Of course, that’s just the first half of the video posted after the break.
Maybe you know someone who’s just a little too cray-cray for Gears of War . If not, now you do. Meet iSekC, who’s cuckoo for Cole Train and was knighted by Cliff Bleszinski himself as the game’s No. 1 fan
Nintendo of America’s towering president stopped by the set of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon yesterday, closing off the show’s week long celebration of upcoming video games with a look at Donkey Kong Country Returns . After teaching Fallon the correct method of Diddy-maneuvering, Reggie Fils-Aime brought out the big guns: The 3DS , which he told Fallon would be coming out “next year.” Oh, that thing you just heard? That was the sound of one thousand Christmases being simultaneously ruined .
Electronic Entertainment Design and Research (EEDAR) has released a report listing various attention metrics from gamers from two sites, GameTrailers and IGN.com, regarding the most “popular” titles from E3. We put “popular” in quotes there because these stats are for things like trailer streaming and page views rather than a scientific survey — this is a general feel of the zeitgeist on these two specific sites rather than a comprehensive view of what gamers thought of E3. But there are interesting things to note even in this limited set of stats, especially when you compare it to our own anecdotal show floor and “chatter” data from you commenters.

Developer tells gaming conference he’s keeping the team small to preserve artistic intent for long-awaited sequel, suggests release is still a ways off. More than two years ago, Ubisoft released the first–and to date, last–trailer for Beyond Good & Evil 2 . The silence surrounding the project has been so thorough, rumors spread last August that development of the game had been put on indefinite hold.
Free-to-play MMO’s in-game population quadrupled in past year; PlayStation 3 arrival date still not specified. Sony Online Entertainment’s Free Realms is earning its “massively multiplayer” status, as the developer announced the free-to-play game has surpassed the 12-million-user mark. Free Realms now has a register base greater than the population of Greece. The publisher says the milestone was reached just after the in-game Summer Camp event began
Sith sister site Massively is picking up chatter from the Star Wars: The Old Republic forums (and evidence from readers) that a closed beta for the game is occurring this weekend, June 25-27. Allegedly, only 100-200 invitations were sent out, so check your email to find out if you had enough midi-chlorians for acceptance. We’re following up with LucasArts for details and confirmation, but it’s like trying to reach Alderaan . You always like to think that the director working on a film adaptation of your favorite video game is actually a fan of the game . Some claim to be, but World of Warcraft director Sam Raimi appears to be the genuine article. Speaking with Collider , Raimi revealed that he’s currently rocking a level 72 character in WoW , this after someone wiped his level 29 shaman “by accident.” Raimi also talked about his WoW film due in 2013, of course, confirming that it won’t be a Tron -like affair with segments set in the real world and the gameworld — “It will all be taking place in the world of Warcraft,” he said. Also offered: his list of likes about the franchise from a director’s perspective, including its scale and locations, calling the world “incredibly, engrossingly terrifying.” [Image credit: CHUD ] Sam Raimi: movie director, level 72 WoW player originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 25 Jun 2010 18:00:00 EST.
A new DSi game has shown up on Australia’s OFLC ratings database, with a title that is really helpful in figuring out what the game is about. How helpful? The game is called “Face Pilot: Fly with your DSi Camera.” That paints a pretty vivid picture! We look forward to finding out exactly how our faces are going to control a flying vehicle.
Landon Donovan’s miracle goal on Wednesday did far more than propel the United States to the World Cup’s knockout stage. It’s made America the No. 1 soccer video game market on the planet.
